Located in the Bahamas and a stop on many Disney Cruise Line itineraries, Castaway Cay is Disney’s very own private island paradise. The island is about three miles long and is reserved for the exclusive use of guests on Disney Cruise Line sailings and its crew members. Here are five things to know about this magical Disney retreat before you set sail on your Caribbean cruise.

Special Disney Postmark

Castaway Cay has an official Bahamian post office on the island. Mail something from the post office and it will be postmarked with an official Castaway Cay postmark. There are postcards in your cabin, or you can purchase some in the gift shops either on the ship or on Castaway Cay. You will need postage, which can be purchased from Guest Services, at the post office or even online before you depart.

Bring Your Photo ID and Key to the World Card

To disembark the ship and buy any souvenirs or beverages on Castaway Cay, you will need your photo ID and your Key to the World Card. This is your lifeline to get items on the island, as cash is not accepted anywhere, except at the post office. If you forget other items like toys and sunblock, you can purchase them with your stateroom key at the souvenir shops on Castaway Cay.

Bring a water bottle and get filtered water for free at coolers around the island rather than buying expensive bottled water. Non-alcoholic beverages like fruit juices and sodas are complimentary, but adults 21 and over have the option to buy alcoholic beverages as well, which is where your stateroom key and ID are necessary. If you want to buy Castaway Cay souvenirs, they are only available on the island, so don’t wait until you get back to the ship.

Disney Sunken Treasure

Grab your snorkel gear and a mandatory life vest and check out Castaway Cay’s snorkeling lagoon. If you didn’t bring your own gear, several places rent snorkel sets on the island. While you’re snorkeling, keep your eyes peeled, as you’ll see more than just a wide variety of interesting marine life. In true Disney fashion, there are several pieces of sunken treasure, including fun sculptures of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Be sure to pack plenty of reef-safe sunscreen, as you’ll find yourself quite sunburnt if you spend the majority of the day in the water.

Use Castaway Cay Trams and Strollers

Castaway Cay is a little bigger than you might expect, and there is more to do than some travelers realize. There is a complimentary tram that will take you to the beaches, and you will definitely want to hop on board rather than make the long walk in the hot sun. There is no reason to bring your own stroller off the ship either as there are plenty of strollers, wagons and even joggers available on the island, all of which are complimentary as well. There are even wheelchairs that can navigate the sandy beaches for those in need.

Plan Your Day

A little advance planning can go a long way to helping you enjoy your day on Castaway Cay. There are three beaches on Castaway Cay, and you need to decide which one is best for you. There is a family beach, an adventure sports beach and Serenity Bay, which is open to adults only. You want to reserve your beach chair early on or things can fill up fast.

Check the schedule for where Disney characters will be if you want photos with the gang decked out in their island gear. And don’t waste your time eating on the ship. Food is complimentary on the island, but you need to time it accordingly as most of the restaurants shut down at 2 p.m.
